Oregon ranked #2 for inbound residential migration, just behind Washington D.C.  One might consider D.C. a bit of a salad spinner given the primary employment is government and that rotates frequently.  New Portland residents are moving from:

Dachis Group (formerly XPLANE and StepChange) made a move into downtown Portland from the Pearl District in early Spring (March/April), effectively doubling their office space. Merging two companies under one roof was no easy task, so it was key that everyone felt the new office space supported the culture of the firm in Portland. 

After an extensive search, a location was identified in the Commonwealth Building on SW Sixth Avenue. It is on the ground floor and has its own entrance and a mezzanine level. Previously occupied by an architecture firm, the space features exposed concrete ceilings, huge windows and an old safe. The look ties nicely to the creative vibe Dachis desires.  The location places them in close proximity to mass transit, food carts, and all the energy of the downtown core.

A major build out included 7-8 small conference/collaborative workrooms and 2 large conference/presentation rooms.  An extensive kitchen with adjoining lounge to accommodate ping pong and shuffleboard was added to create a relaxing and fun hang out area for everyone. The mezzanine level is a winding curve shape affixed atop several large concrete pillars and provides some interesting opportunities for peeking down onto common areas.  A fading frosted glass technique was used on the windows to prevent pedestrian traffic from seeing in while still allowing natural light into the space. Building amenities include a fitness center, showers, lockers and secured bike storage for those who commute on two wheels.

All in all, one very cool space for thinking creatively.
